Grading • Numerical average of assignments/assessments • Assessments - teacher observations - student journals - performance tasks - rubrics - collaborative conversation with peers • Grading Scale A-100%-90% B-89%-80% C-79%-74% D-73%-70% F-69% and below
A Typical Day • 7:25– 8:00 Arrival & Morning Work • 8:00 – 10:25 Reading/Language Arts/Writing block • 10:25 – 11:10 Specials • 11:10 – 11:55 Science/Social Studies • 11:57 – 12:27 Lunch • 12:30 – 12:50 Recess • 12:55 - 2:10 Math • 2:10 – 2:25 Agendas/Dismissal • *Morning snack/water bottles • *Restroom Breaks
Math • Assessments will be performance based tasks, constructed responses, and multiple choice. • Math Journals promote mathematical thinking and problem solving. • Introduction of new skills in fractions, geometry, multiplication/division, and problem solving.
Reading • 45 minutes of simultaneous independent reading (research shows this is crucial) / small-group conferences / individual conferences • Flexible grouping based on need / skill level / common theme / standards that must be taught • Books read will vary from student self-selected choices to teacher-assigned books and will be chosen from varying genres • Read at Home (RAH) nightly and ongoing completion of reading log.
Writing • Writing process • (pre-writing, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing) • Different Genres of Writing • Narrative • Informational • Opinion • Student Conferences
Science Curriculum • Use of the science lab-at least once per unit • Topics include: • Water & Weather • Force & Motion • Light & Sound • Stars, Star Patterns, & Planets • Earth, Moon, & the Solar System • Ecosystems & Protective Adaptations
Social Studies • Maps & Globes • Economics • Native Americans • Explorers • Early American History • Related field trip- Cobb County Youth Museum
Health Studies • Guidance counselor – monthly in-class presentations • Fire Safety • Emotional / Mental Health • Drug Awareness • Nutrition & Digestion • Personal Health & Safety • Disease Prevention
Specials • 10:25-11:10 • Monday-Fitness • Tuesday-PE • Wednesday-Art • Thursday-PE • Friday-Music
Lunch Procedures • Green, Yellow, Red system in cafeteria used to determine appropriate class behavior • Students expected to talk quietly, raise their hands if they need assistance, and clean around themselves • Students expected to earn a green to avoid being penalized
Homework Assignments • Written in the agenda nightly • PLEASE SIGN THE AGENDA NIGHTLY! Signature acknowledges that reading has been completed & agenda looked at by an adult • No more than 40 minutes total per night • Assist but (please) don’t do HW for them! • Daily assignments will vary and may include: • 25 minutes of reading (not included in 40 min.) • Math • Spelling • Science/Social Studies (written assignments/studying for tests) as needed only
Behavior System • Money System • Orange Slips = Work Study Infractions (Late or missing assignments, disorganization) • Slips sent home on daily basis. Please sign and return • Behavior / Conduct Infractions • Slips sent home on a daily basis. Please sign and return.
Weekly Evaluation Folders • Friday Folders taken home each Friday. Keep all papers and return the folder on Monday. • Monthly Report will be included in the Friday Folder on the first Friday of the month. Please sign in the appropriate spot, empty all papers, and return on Monday • Monthly Progress Report shows current grades in all subjects, behavior/work study progress, etc. • Grades of D or F must be corrected, signed, and returned
4th Grade Testing • SRI • Math and ELA integrated (with Science or Social Studies) Benchmarks • -given quarterly • -multiple choice and performance task based • CRCT – Spring
