  1. Grower Feedback 2007 • Lighter crop than 2006 by 20 - 30% in some cases • Higher packout % by 10 -15% on average in navels and soft citrus • 2007 A Bumper year for Satsumas with good internal and external fruit quality resulting good packouts. • Clementines packed out well with good fruit sizes • FCM interceptions early on in season (Newhall and Navelina Navels) • FCM control poor on early navels – open navel ends = poor spray coverage • Newhall and Navelina are not a good option for USA the question remains what are our options on early navels ? • Abnormal rainfall in the Western Cape = possible post harvest issues • Pre-harvest applications to combat Post harvest infections reduced infection considerably • season ending on a high note with Valencia packouts exceeding expectations

  2. Packhouse Feedback 2007 • A positive start to the season with high packout % in Satsumas and Clementines • The use of new plastic bins = improvement in De-greening and higher packouts • A great season Disrupted by early interceptions of FCM in Navels destined for the USA • The introduction of the SOP system in Packhouses was well received by packhouses and implemented immediately • Packhouses benefited from the new Pro active approach as potentially high risk orchards were eliminated at an early stage in the chain • After numerous visits to FPT Packhouses were encouraged to keep up the standard of packing especially for USA • Feedback from USA inspections was prompt with only isolated cases where packhouses had to wait for consignments on hold especially toward the end of the season • With the implentation of SOP in packhouses from the word go in 2008 we are positive 2007 will not be repeated

  3. Prospects for 2008 Early days but there is a strong green blossom on the trees indicating a crop similar to that in 2006 with smaller size but higher volume per tree Growers to be aware that 2008 can be another potential year for creasing. (smaller fruit thinner rinds) The SIT for FCM is to be launched in November 2007 comprising 1500 ha in the Citrusdal upper valley. The first trial aerial releases of sterile FCM has been done at ALG estates during September with the trial to be repeated in October.
