Basic Information • Discovered on September 23, 1846 • Last planet to be found • Given the name Neptune because of the Roman God of the sea. • 13 moons, • 7th largest moon in solar system= Triton. • Average temperature of Triton is -391 degrees Fahrenheit • Credited for discovery: Urban Le Verrier • Has very faint rings • 5 principle rings • Found in 1984 • Extremely dark material, high dust proportions • Similar to Uranus’ rings
Physical Characteristics • Cloud cover gives the planet a vivid blue tint • Clouds are white- and composed of methane ice • Has a slushy fluid mix of water • 17 times the mass of earth • 58 times earths volume • Rocky core • Fastest winds of any planet in the solar system. (1,500MPH) • Neptune's magnetic poles are tipped over 47 degrees
Basic Properties/Statistics • Tilt: 28.32 Not much different from earth • Direction of rotation on its axis: Counter clockwise rotating same direction, traveling around the sun. • Length of day: 16h 16m • Length of year: 164.79 Earth years • Far from Sun: 2.798,000,000 miles • Seasons last more than 40 years.
Basic Properties cont. • Average temperature: -353 degrees Fahrenheit (during the day) • -488 degrees at night • Mass compared to Earth: 17.14 times earth • Density compared to Earth: 1.76g • Considered one of the great Jovian gas giants (mostly rock and water) • Atmosphere: mostly hydrogen and helium. Also, methane water and other ices. • General Structure: • 80% Hydrogen • 19% Helium • 15% Methane • Core is made of liquid rock
Major Features • Ocean of hydrogen, helium and water • Great Dark Spot/Smaller Dark Spot • Much like Jupiter’s (depression caused by large Cirrius clouds) • First seen on Voyager’s visit to Neptune • Later seen by Hubble to have been replaced by another spot in the Northern Hemisphere
VisitsbyProbes • Neptune was visited by a space probe known as the Voyager 2 in 1999. It took the probe 12 years to reach Neptune. • One of the negative aspects of sending a probe to Neptune is that by the time the probe gets to Neptune the technology is 12 years old. • All we know about Neptune is from Voyager 2, so information is still primitive, and much more will be discovered in future years.
‘Fun’ Facts! • Astronomers use seasons on Neptune to predict cold harsh winters or long hot summers on Earth. • The methane in the planet is what makes it bright blue • Due in part to Methane absorption of white light
