  5. How to reference ? REFERENCING IS HARD WORK !! Good practice: Keep reference information on everything you read in researching your paper

  6. Referencing styles A variety of methods exist Be consistent within your own paper

  7. What information is required ? • Author(s) • Title • article title & journal name, or • book title • Publication date • For books: Publisher, city • For Web sites: URL (incl. date viewed) e.g. www.cica.ca/news/cpab.htm (Jan.11,2003)

  8. Academic referencing components • brief reference information in text * • quotation marks, if applicable * • footnotes / endnotes • reference list * • bibliography * these are required

Referencing exercise See Handout • these are extracts from an accounting journal paper showing different referencing situations For example, to reference this paper • In the body of your paper’s text use: (Hartgraves and Benston 2002) • In the Reference List use: Hartgraves, A. and G. Benston. 2002. The Evolving Accounting Standards for Special Purpose Entities and Consolidations, Accounting Horizons 16(3): 245-258.

Response 1: Hartgraves and Bentson (2002) provide a detailed summary of the U.S. accounting standards for special purpose entities. Response 2: U.S. accounting standards for special purpose entities had been evolving since the early 1970s but contained important weaknesses at the time of the Enron scandal (Hartgraves and Bentson 2002) .

Another Response 2: Enron had set up a complex structure containing a large number of special purpose entities, with the main purpose being to avoid disclosing significant financial obligations while still complying with existing U.S. accounting standards. (Hartgraves and Bentson 2002; Powers et al. 2002) .
