Numbers in R6 strain denote spr nos. and in TIGR4 strain denotes SP nos. TIGR4: AE007364; AE007365; R6:AE007317. As suggested before by Hakenbeck (2) and by deSaizieu (1) there is an allelic variation in the blp locus between TIGR4 and R6 strains. Genes annotated as blpI, J, K, L, M, N, O and X, along with some intermediate genes are present in TIGR4 but not in R6. Hakenbeck represented this region as two separate loci, spi and the pnc resp. deSaizieu reported induction of the entire blp cluster of TIGR4 strain in response to its BlpC peptide. Consistent with Hakenbeck's report he also showed that the peptides were strain specific i.e., BlpC of TIGR4 does not induce blp genes in R6 and vice versa. For R6 he reported increased expression of blpA, B, K, U, T and blpZ genes in response to the R6 BlpC peptide. In the present study, we observed induction of some of the blp genes in response to CSP. Genes that increased their expression in response to CSP include SP0530, blpY, Z and SP0547. Some of the genes were invariant (shown in black arrows). It is interesting that these genes are induced early. Since some genes are induced both during competence and by BIP, it seems that there might be some cross talk between these loci.
