Conclusions • Locations 1: • There are 137 Data Centers in the data set available for download, but 81 Data Centers do not have specific locations (Latitude and Longitude). • So any map is severely limited, even misleading, by only showing less than half the Data Centers. Certainly some Data Centers locations are not provided for security reasons, but at least the reason for so many missing locations should be given. • In addition, when I mouse over the Data Center Location Column, I see the Latitude and Longitude in parentheses, but the data is not available for use in mapping so I had to manually extract it to Latitude and Longitude columns. • I found that two Alaska and two Washington, DC data center locations appear to be in error so the user can have more confidence in the map Locations 2 that I produced than the one produced from the downloaded dataset! • Locations 2 • There are only 36 Data Centers on the CIO.gov map and these are shown by Color for Department and by Shape for Status.
Conclusions • Analyzing All That’s Fit to Print – Text Analysis and Journalism: • As Tim Berners-Lee pointed out this past year, “Journalism is going to be about poring over data and equipping yourself with the tools to analyze it and picking out what's interesting. And keeping it in perspective, helping people out by really seeing where it all fits together, and what's going on in the country.” This fundamental shift is changing the landscape of how news is discovered and even created. Data journalism manifests not only when journalists themselves become more proficient in RDF and Python (really Data Science), but when the tools of the trade are custom-made for journalistic use, allowing writers to discover those stories lurking within the data itself. During this panel we'll discuss the most innovative, affordable and user-friendly text analysis tools on the market and the ways journalism can and will evolve as data drives the news. • Source: http://semtech2011.semanticweb.com/sessionPop.cfm?confid=62&proposalid=4036
Conclusions I Tweeted on June 17th: Data.gov does not host 389,681 datasets. Data.gov has not spawned a global movement. We will not see an explosion of Data.gov platform apps. http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/05/20/data-apps-putting-government-information-work-you
Conclusions Launching in Summer 2011, AOL Government will provide the government workforce with a new blend of work-related news, data streams and information tools focusing primarily on the business and profession, rather than the politics, of government. http://semanticommunity.info/AOL_Government/Show_Me_the_Data
