The Holiness of God Woe is me!!
The Holiness of God • Holiness is probably the most prominent attribute of God that is mentioned in scripture. • Mentioned over 600 times • ”For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy” (Isaiah 57:15)
The Holiness of God • The only attribute raised to the third degree • “Holy, Holy, Holy” • “And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, "HOLY, HOLY, HOLYisTHELORDGOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHOWAS AND WHO IS AND WHOIS TO COME.’” (Rev 4:8)
The Holiness of God • What is Holiness? • Distinct, separate, in a class by Oneself • Transcendence • Far beyond all ordinary limits "There is no one holy like the LORD, Indeed, there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.” (1 Sam 2:2)
The Holiness of God • What is Holiness? • Distinct, separate, in a class by Oneself • Morally Pure • HE IS PERFECT! • “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)
The Holiness of God • What is Holiness? • Distinct, Separate, in a Class by Oneself • Morally Pure • Not Neutral towards Sin • Anger, Hatred, and Wrath • Nadab and Abihu • Uzzah • The Ungodly (2 Thes. 1:7-9) • Christians (Heb 10:26-30)
The scary verse on Holiness • “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” -Heb 12:14 (NKJV) • Holiness is the standard we must meet to make it to Heaven • This is not possible! • Our sin makes us unholy! • NO ONE is “holy” enough to enter heaven on their own.
How Can We Become Holy? THE CROSS
The Cross • “And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight -- 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard” -Col 1:21-23 (NKJV)
The Cross • Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. -Eph 5:25-27 (NKJV) the washing of water by the word
Responding to the Holy One as Christians • Humility and Honesty • Growing in Holiness • See our sin • Walk in the light • Read and Heed • Confess and repent of sin
