Physical Coldness • Scan through the first few pages of A Christmas Carol until you reach the line ‘mournful meditation on the threshold’ • Make a note of any references to cold weather as you read – you can do this in pairs. • Write a subheading – Physical Coldness • Choose three of the quotations you have found and write them underneath your subheading – you will need to leave space around each one so you can annotate them.
Annotate each of your quotations – use the example below as a guide. The use of ‘in the clouds’ suggests the tower is high as well as the density of the fog. (Referring to the church clock) ‘…struck the hour and quarters in the clouds, with tremulous vibrations afterwards, as if its teeth were chattering in its frozen head…’ The use of personification ‘frozen head’ and the simile ‘teeth... chattering’ make the reader feel sorry for the clock as it seems to be suffering in the cold. The verb ‘chattering’ helps us to understand how the sound of the bell echoes after it has rung but the sound seems broken up as if the clock is trembling.
Metaphorical Coldness • So, the cold is used by Dickens to describe the physical environment, however it also mirrors the cruel and unsympathetic nature of Scrooge towards others. • Look again at the same section of text and pick out any words/ phrases which indicate how cold and unfeeling Scrooge can be. • Write a second subheading: Metaphorical Coldness and work with a partner to do the exact same thing again with your new quotations (at least 3)
