  1. Current Global Issue The Belo Monte Dam Project Issue in Progress Mr. Paleologopoulos

  2. Step One: Choosing an Event • This had to be worthy of deeper understanding. • I looked on the Current Global Issues page on the course web site http://blog.whps.org/blizpal/current-global-issues/ • I then clicked on http://www.globalissues.org/ • Scrolling down I saw under “Latest News” a link to this article Brazil: Belo Monte Dam Faces Endless Hurdles and Controversies

  3. Choosing an Event - Continued • Reading the article, I could see that it was controversial and was an important issue to many people. • You can read the article here http://www.globalissues.org/news/2011/04/09/9218 • What made me pick this topic was the idea of a native people having to fight their government

  4. Step Two: Working Alone • This was an easy choice. • I was presenting this as a model knowing that Ms. Blitzer and Mr. Wilson would be doing their own topic. • I liked the idea of being in control of the work after spending time working as part of a group in planning for the final presentation.

  5. Step Three: Posting my Comment • This was important in case someone else picked this issue. • I went back to the blog page: http://blog.whps.org/blizpal/current-global-issues/and posted a comment. • I waited for the comment to be approved, and in a little while, my comment was approved and appeared with all the others.

  6. Investigation: Starting Point • I had one article, but I knew I needed more. • I saw this report was from Inter Press Service • I looked for related stories about this story from other sources • Some I trust more than others A poor neighborhood in Altamira, Brazil that floods during high season will be left permanently under water by the Belo Monte dam. - Mario Osava/IPS

  7. Investigation – Key Word Search • Using the words “Belo Monte Dam,” “Brazil,” and “News,” I got these sources. • Organization of American States Requests Immediate Suspension of Belo Monte Dam in the Brazilian Amazon – Amazon Watch • James Cameron Brings Arnold Schwarzenegger to Amazon to See Firsthand a Battle Between Old and New Energy – Paris Herald • Belo Monte Dam Means Floods for Some, Drought for Others – IPS News • Brazil court reverses Amazon Monte Belo dam suspension – BBC News • Brazil rejects request to halt Belo Monte dam in Amazon - BBC News • Brazil: Indigenous tribes protest against Amazon dam – BBC News • Brazil Rejects Panel’s Request to Stop Dam – NY Times

  8. Where I am Now • Now I am reading these articles to get a deeper understanding of the causes and effects. • I chose only articles from this year (2011) since the situation is changing every month.

  9. Where I am Now - Continued • When I can understand the system better, I will be able to explain what I see as the relationships and processes involved. • I am thinking of presenting the issue as a PowerPoint, but I have had some issues with presenting with PowerPoint before. • I may choose to devote a blog page to this issue. I have not found a leverage point.

  10. Next Steps – I have to: • Analyze the facts and opinions found from the people involved on all sides of the issue • Map the underlying structure mentally or on paper with causes, effects, and any feedback loops • Try to find a leverage point to change the system • Document my sources for presentation
