History • Records show that golf was played as early as 1672. However, it is claimed that Mary, Queen of Scots, played the game as early as 1567. • Between 1750 and 1850, golf developed into the game we know today. • May 14, 1754, 22 ‘Noblemen and Gentlemen’ formed the Society of St Andrews Golfers and began playing for the silver club annually over the Links of St Andrews.
History • In 1764, the Links, St. Andrews, which later became known as the Old Course, was reduced from 22 holes to 18, which, gradually became accepted as the standard format for golf courses. • First tournament, October 17,1860 • Professional Golfer’s Association founded in 1916
Scoring • Lowest score wins • Each hole has a set “par” • Par is how many strokes it should take the player to put the ball in the hole. • Par on front nine + par on back nine = total score • Ex. 36+36=72
