Thesis • Alcohol Abuse in a worldwide problem that causes death, health problems, and relationship problems; no person should let themselves become addicted to alcohol!
Alcohol Related Deaths • Everyday almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.
2010 Statistics! • In 2010 alone, 10,228 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, that accounts for 1/3 of all traffic related deaths in the U.S.
More deaths do to alcohol…… • At all levels of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), the risk of being involved in a crash is greater for young people than old people • Of the 211 child passengers ages 14 and younger who died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2010, over half 131 were riding in the vehicle with the alcohol-impaired driver.
Alcohol may appear to some people as harmful but odds are they do not know the extensive damage it can have on the brain.
Alcohol’s Harmful Effect On The Brain • Up to 80% of alcohol, however, have a deficiency in thiamine and some of these people will go on to develop a serious brain disorder called Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome.
What is WKS? • WKS can make you have mental confusion, paralysis of the nerves that move the eyes, and difficulty with muscle coordination.
Alcohol effects on the brain cont… • Chronic Alcohol exposure leads to brain adaptations that shift behavior control away from an area of the brain involved in complex decision making.
Mixing Alcoholism and Family.. • Many families have the tendency to feel that they must protect the alcoholic member by helping them hide their addiction. Kinda like Superman saving somebody who does not deserve saving.
Kids and Alcohol • In the U.S., 35% of child abuse involves alcohol. • In Germany, 32% of child abuse involves alcohol. • Bruises, burns and fractures, and stress-related symptoms are some of the after effects of abuse.
Psychological problems • Children can be depressed, always in fear, or attempt suicide due to the mistreatment. • They are also at greater risk of being violent later in life
Alcohol and other drugs.. • When alcohol is mixed with other drugs in can turn into a toxin causing death.
Alcohol leading to other drugs… • Alcohol has been found to be a gateway drug and in many cases leads to more serious drugs.
Getting Over Alcohol • Get rid of temptations • Announce your goal • Be upfront about your new limits • Learn from the past • Avoid bad influences!!!
