SURVEY FOR WOMEN GOD IS THE HEAD OF CHRIST CHRIST IS THE HEAD OF MAN MAN IS THE HEAD OF WOMAN
1 COR 11:3 • Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
QUOTE Why, in our culture, do so many discussions of male/female roles seem so painful, unfair, unreal, unfunny, and even preposterous? Because of men who demand submission from their wives but in turn submit themselves to no one, including God. . . . (Stu Webber, Tender Warrior, p. 87)
QUOTE . . . We men truncate the divine process by our arrogant, foolish, egocentric, SELFishness. WE cannot blame women for being frustrated because they fear the injustice of being under headship that itself is not accountable. (Stu Webber, Tender Warrior, p. 87)
1 COR 11:1 • Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
1 COR 11:2 • I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you.
OUR POSITION 1 COR 11:1-3
1 COR 11:3 • Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
JER 10:21 (NASB) • For the shepherds have become stupid And have not sought the LORD; Therefore they have not prospered, And all their flock is scattered.
QUOTE There are levels and kinds of leadership for which woman may and often should take responsibility. There are kinds of teaching, and administration, organization, ministry, influence, and initiative that wives should undertake at home and women should undertake at church. . . . (John Piper and Wayne Grudem, Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, (p. 64)
QUOTE . . . Male headship at home and eldership at church mean that men bear the responsibility for the overall pattern of life. Headship does not prescribe the details of who does precisely what activity. (John Piper and Wayne Grudem, Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, (p. 64)
1 COR 11:3 • Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
OUR PRACTICE 1 COR 11:4-7
1 COR 11:4 • Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
1 COR 11:5 • And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is just as though her head were shaved.
1 COR 11:6 • If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.
1 COR 11:7 • A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
1 COR 11:8 • For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
1 COR 11:9 • neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
1 COR 11:10 • For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.
OUR PARTNERSHIP 1 COR 11:11-16
1 COR 11:11 • In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
1 COR 11:12 • For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
1 COR 11:13 • Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
1 COR 11:14 • Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
1 COR 11:15 • but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
1 COR 11:16 • If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God.
QUOTE On one hand, custom dictates what hair arrangements are generally masculine or feminine. On the other hand, nature dictates that men feel ashamed when they wear symbols of femininity. . . . So Paul’s point in this passage is that the relationships of manhood and womanhood, which are rooted in the created order (1 Corinthians 11:7-9), (John Piper and Wayne Grudem, Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, p. 71)
QUOTE should find appropriate cultural expression in the worship service. Nature teaches this by giving men and women deep and differing inclinations about the use of masculine and feminine symbols. (John Piper and Wayne Grudem, Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, p. 71)
