  2. How Cancer Harms the Body • Tumor • An abnormal mass of tissue that has no natural role is the body • Tumors can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous) • Tumors that are malignant spread to neighboring tissues and through the blood or lymph to other parts of the body

Types of Cancer • Cancer can develop in almost any part of the body and in different tissues of each part • Lymphomas – cancers of the immune system • Leukemias– cancers of the blood forming organs • Carcinomas-cancers of the glands and body linings including skin and linings of the digestive tract and lungs • Sarcomas-cancer of the connective tissue including bones, ligaments ,and muscle

  4. Risk Factors for Cancer • Tobacco Use • Sexually Transmitted Diseases • Dietary Factors • Radiation • To Reduce Risk: • Practice abstinence • Be physically active • Eat nutritious foods • Protect your skin from the sun • Avoid tobacco and alcohol • Recognize warning signs of cancer
