QEP activities / fall 2006 Establish goals for academic year Initiate MyHumanity project Build working relationships on and off campus Teach first iteration of GES-198
Goals for academic year Establish and refine GES-198 Create a pre-test and post-test assessment of knowledge and skills contained in GES-198 Develop and seek external funding for a project on digital knowledge-production Develop a project on the design of learning environments for the digital era Explore the feasibility / desirability of developing an elective course on critical perspectives of digital media Conduct a formal needs assessment and write a strategic plan for digital technology at NCSA Extend the advisory network
The MyHumanity project Concretizes aspects of the QEP in visible, project-based form Derives from and builds on GES-198 Correlates social (mega), organizational (macro)and individual (micro) aspects of digital media
Relationships! The QEP to me represents a social network that I sought to strengthen I was invited to establish good working relationships with the Kenan Institute and the Center for Design Innovation I met with NCSA ITWG and gained very valuable insight and advisementfrom IT colleagues and all other campus entities I am working with key players on campuson special projects –for example I am currently talking with Dean Wilcox and David Smith about a grassroots digital-creativity event
First iteration of GES-198 The course design was very successful The implementation of the design reflected the designer’s paradox The revisions being planned will take the course to a higher levelof performance and relevance I am convinced that what students need to learn in the field of digital technology includes but significantly differs from set of skills targeted in the ETS instrument. GES-198 should evolve as a humanities-basedcourse that involves the learning of design skills, information skills, media skills, and digital citizenship in a project-based framework
Revisions for winter term Digital Bob replaces Dr. King! DB reduces projects to two: one social-issue project andone digital-art project DB increases focused-instruction DB adds small-group formatfor discussion DB provides opportunity for involvement in real-world productions DB installs sound / video productionbooth for project creation Classroom reconfigured? Hallway gallery?
Assessment Create pre-test / post-test to quickly assess knowledge of design process, information skills, media skills, and digital citizenship Continue to gather qualitative data via interview process Continue to experiment and learn, and involve students!
