LEEWAY • NOUN • “A MARGIN FOR VARIATION” which means you have room to change things up a bit • Example: The teacher gave us a lot of leeway to figure out what kind of project we wanted to do. In other words, our teacher pretty much let us decide how to create our own project! We got to set our own rules.
EXAGGERATE • VERB • “TO OVERSTATE OR OVER-EMPHASIZE” which means you make a bigger deal out of it • Example: Although the new shoes are the right size, they seem to exaggerate the size of my feet, making them look two sizes larger! • Example: She’s always exaggerating her stories. Like if it snowed a little bit, she would say there was a blizzard!
DEPLETE • VERB • “TO RUN OUT OF OR TO USE UP” • Example: Too much fishing and hunting have depleted the game in the forest. • Example: My Pepsi supply is seriously depleted after the zombie attack last week. Those zombies sure do love their Pepsi.
ARROGANT • ADJECTIVE • “PROUD OR THINKING THAT YOU’RE BETTER THAN OTHERS” • Example: The smart kid was arrogant and acted like he was better than everyone else in the room. • Example: When my friend got her new Gucci bag, she acted so arrogant because she thought that bag made her better than us.
ELABORATE • ADJECTIVE • “FULL OF DETAILS / COMPLEX / COMPLICATED” • Example: The preparations for the Sixth Grade Social were elaborate, requiring careful planning and attention to detail. • Example: My teacher told me to elaborate more in my story, so that means I didn’t really explain myself very much and I have to add more details.
DRASTIC • ADJECTIVE • “EXTREME” • Example: In order to help kids eat healthier, drastic changes have to be made at home so that parents and kids make good food choices every day.
ABUNDANT • ADJECTIVE • “PLENTIFUL / LOTS OF SOMETHING” • Example: With all the abundant rain this year, the plants and flowers and grass should look really pretty! • Example: I have an abundant amount of homework, so I’d better get started!
RASH • ADJECTIVE • “OVERLY HASTY / NOT THOUGHT OUT CAREFULLY / RUSHED” • Example: We rushed into the situation and made a rash decision that we later regretted. • Example: It was a rash decision because I didn’t really think it through at the time.
