Topics Covered • Digestion and metabolism (comparative approach) • Approach nutrition from the inside-out • Understand the digestive system leads to understanding the ability of the animal to utilize various feedstuffs • Nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, water) • Energy systems • Protein systems • Regulation of feed intake • NOT feeds and feeding

Class Grading • Quizzes (not cumulative, not required) • Sometimes announced, sometimes not • Exams (cumulative and required) • Always announced • Homework assignments • Sometimes announced, sometimes not • Final exam (required and cumulative) • What you retain from class is most important • Grading scale is on syllabus

  4. Missed Quizzes or Exams • For SCHEDULED exams: • E-mail me before the scheduled exam date if at all possible • Provide a valid excuse • Re-schedule as soon as possible • By the end of the week • For quizzes • No make-up possibilities, no matter what the excuse

Road to Learning and Success • Your part of the bargain • Come to class ON TIME • Be respectful of others if you expect respect • No newspapers, laptops, conversations or cell phones • Read the book and copy the notes BEFORE class • Use your brain – TRY before you ask for help • Expect to have to work for what you learn… • Get to know your TA’s… • My part of the bargain • Clearly provide the information needed to learn concepts • Be available (within reason) • 1 hour/student/week would take >3 full-time people • This is only ONE PART of our jobs!!
