  1. Student Sustainability Advisory Council Bonnie Slaton HORT 4012

Mission statement • We promote sustainability, preservation, and conservation on behalf of the LSU student body.  Our team of student representatives from across campus collaborates to create, enhance, and encourage sustainability by educating students, faculty, staff and the Baton Rouge. • We believe students at LSU can play a positive role in our future as we focus resources on economic, environmental, and social challenges.

  3. objectives • Facilitate interactive cooperation between student sustainability initiatives and LSU Administration.  • Develop new educational programming and outreach during Orientation, Fall and Spring Festivals, and key athletic seasons.   • Assist with existing greening events and activities on campus such as Earth Day, Spring Greening Day, and Unplug Campaign.

  4. Objectives cont. • Establish AASHE STARS Co-Curricular credit fulfillment, which includes engaging students to serve as educators in peer to peer sustainability outreach. • Create a list of short and long range goals that align with the LSU Flagship Agenda and Sustainability Action Plan (in development). • Propose a resolution to Student Government to continue sustainability programming, education, and an adoption of a themed semester, year, or first-year-experience.

  5. Details • Housed under Campus Life and Financial and Administrative Services • Funding: need funding for 2 interns next semester to help the Office of Sustainability and help plan the Student Sust. Advisory Council • Still some details to work out

  6. By end of semester • Make progress on sustainability education-Earth Day was a success! • Bike share program • Composting on campus • Would like to hold first meeting in Fall 2012

  7. Possible Representatives-student orgs • Baptist Collegiate Ministry • Environmental Conservation Organization • Greek Board of Directors • Residence Hall Association • Student Government • Hort. Club • International Cultural Center • Volunteer LSU • Ag College Council

  8. Examples from other Universities • University of Maryland has and Office of Sustainability, a Sustainability council , Sustainability funding and policies • Michigan State University is one of the nation’s top five sustainable campuses and also had Office of Sustainability, LEED certified buildings, student organic farm, and a bike share program • This is the type of university LSU should strive to be, we need to be widely recognized as a national model for a ‘Green University’
