  1. Chapter 1

  2. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 1 • Jesus is eternal (John 1:1-4)! • Jesus has always existed and has always possessed the nature of God (cf. Phil. 2:6)! • Jesus is the Creator and Sustainer of all things (cf. Col. 2:15-17; Heb. 1:1-3)! • The eternal Word took on a body of flesh, in order to save mankind (John 1:14-18)! • John the Baptizer emphasized His eternal nature repeatedly (John 1:15, 27, 30)!

  3. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 1 • Believers have the right to be saved, but they are not already saved (John 1:12-13)! • The act of believing does not make one a child of God (cf. Jas. 2:19-26; Gal. 3:26-27)! • To those who received Him, Jesus (at the very same time) gave the right to be saved! • One cannot become what he already is! • It is only “in His name” or “by His name” that we can be saved (cf. Acts 4:12; 10:43, 48)! • Salvation requires being “born…of God,” which is a step beyond receiving/believing!

  4. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 1 • Jesus is Jehovah! • Jesus is God (John 1:1, 14) ~ There is no God but Jehovah (Isa. 45:5)! • Jesus made all things (John 1:3) ~ “Jehovah…maketh all things” (Isa. 44:24)! • John prepared way for Jesus (John 1:23) ~ Sent to prepare for Jehovah (Isa. 40:3)!

  5. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 1 • Jesus is the Lamb of God (John 1:29, 36)! • Like the paschal lamb of the OT, God sent His Son to be the sacrifice for us! • Jesus bore our sins, suffered in our place and allowed our penalty to fall on Him!

  6. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 1 • Only Jesus could baptize with the Holy Spirit (John 1:33)! • John the Baptizer and others could baptize with water (John 1:26, 31, 33)! • Only Jesus could and did baptize with the Holy Spirit (cf. Matt. 3:11)! • Holy Spirit baptism could not be administered by men but only the Lord! • The one baptism (Eph. 4:5) that remains is water baptism of the New Testament!

  7. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 1 • Bringing others to Christ is of fundamental importance (John 1:35-51)! • Those who “look to Jesus” (35) will “follow Jesus” (37) and “remain with Him” (39)! • The FIRST thing Andrew did when he found Jesus was to bring his brother (1:41-42)! • “Come and see” is an approved and effective method of evangelism (1:39; 4:29)!

  8. An Overview of John 1Theme of John 1: “Introducing Jesus” • People who introduced others to Jesus in John 1: • Holy Spirit introduced OT readers to Jesus (1:17, 23, 29, 41, 45, 49). • Moses and the prophets introduced readers to Jesus (1:45). • Apostle John introduced his readers to the eternal Jesus (1:1-4). • John the Baptizer came to bear witness of Jesus (1:6-9, 15, 19-28). • John the Baptizer introduced his disciples to Jesus (1:35-40). • Andrew introduced his brother, Simon, to Jesus (John 1:40-42). • Philip introduced Nathanael to Jesus (John 1:43-51).

  9. An Overview of John 1Theme of John 1: “Introducing Jesus” • The names used to introduce Jesus in John 1: • The Word (John 1:1, 14). • God (John 1:1-2). • Maker/Creator (John 1:3). • The Life (John 1:4). • The Light of Men (John 1:4). • The Light (John 1:5, 7, 8). • The True Light (John 1:9). • Only begotten of the Father (14). • Before me (John 1:15, 27, 30). • Jesus Christ (John 1:17). • The only begotten God (1:18). • The Christ (John 1:20, 25, 41). • The Prophet (John 1:21, 25). • The LORD (John 1:23). • One among you (John 1:26). • Jesus (29,36-38,42-43,47-48,50). • The Lamb of God (1:29, 36). • The Son of God (John 1:34, 49). • Rabbi/Teacher (John 1:38, 49). • The Messiah (John 1:41). • Jesus of Nazareth (John 1:45). • The son of Joseph (John 1:45). • The King of Israel (John 1:49). • The Son of Man (John 1:51).

  10. How Chapter 1 Helps to Fulfill the Overall Purpose of the Gospel of John • The First Four Verses • In Genesis 1:1, Moses starts “in the beginning” and goes “forward in time.” • In John 1:1, John starts “in the beginning” and goes “backward into eternity.” • The Testimony of Many Persons • John the Baptizer—He saw “the Spirit descend & remain” on Him (esp. Jn. 1:31-34). • Andrew—“We have found the Messiah” (John 1:40-42). • Philip—“We have found Him of whom Moses & the prophets wrote” (John 1:43-45). • Nathanael—“You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (John 1:46-51).

  11. How Chapter 1 Helps to Fulfill the Overall Purpose of the Gospel of John • The Testimony of the Holy Spirit in Old Testament Prophecy Fulfilled in the Christ • John was to “prepare the way of the LORD” (John 1:23; Isa. 40:3). • The Testimony of Old Testament Types • Jacob’s ladder to heaven ~ Christ is man’s ladder to heaven (Gen. 28:10-17; Jn. 1:51).

  12. How Chapter 1 Helps to Fulfill the Overall Purpose of the Gospel of John • Various Other Points • Combining the name “Jesus” with title of “Christ” in “Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). • Calling Him the only begotten of the Father (John 1:14). • Calling Him the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father (John 1:18). • Recording the amazing ability of Jesus to know the hearts/lives of man (John 1:47-50). • Combining so frequently Jesus, Christ, Messiah and God (John 1:41, 45, 49, etc.).
