  5. Inadequate supervision - Consequences • Large work areas resulting in a lack of access control/ surveillance • Others remaining in the area • Inadequate supervision of the source - theft/ loss • Source remaining on site • Delays

  6. Supervision of contractors - Benefits • Adherence to procedures • Lower doses to radiographers • Restriction of exposure to others • Incidents do not become accidents

  7. Responsibilities - Radiographer • The radiographers do the work! • The radiography company is principally responsible for supervision • Co-operate with site owner to ensure that work area is safe for them to operate in • Restriction of access • Contingency plans

  8. Responsibilities - Client • Liaise with the radiographers • area to be demarcated • access controls • safety considerations (lighting, access etc) • contingency plans • Liaise with others (staff/ contractors) on site

What else can the Client do? • Prior to arrival • Identify who will be doing the work • Confirmation of training (PCN etc) • Safety procedures/ risk assessment • Source/ projection equipment details • Emergency equipment available? • Notification to authorities? • Relevant names (RPA, RPS etc) • Barrier surveillance • Public access?

  10. What else can the Client do? • On arrival • Confirmation of source details etc • Dose rate - container • Emergency equipment? • Radiation monitors, EPD etc? • Barriers/ lights/ notices?

  11. What else can the Client do? • Prior to radiography • Barriers etc correctly set? • Permit to work issued? • After radiography finished • Check dose rate on container (confirm presence of source!) • Container locked?
