Change A Light NC Tom Mather Milli Hayman N.C. Division of Air Quality April 2008
Goals: Change A Light NC • Increase awareness of CFL benefits • Distribute free CFL bulbs and information • Encourage more use of CFLs • Conserve energy, reduce air pollution
Key Message: Benefits of CFLs • Conserve energy • Cut air pollution • Save money
Conserving Energy CFLs use one-fourth the energy of standard bulbs. Each CFL can save more than 400 pounds of coal in its lifetime.
Saving Money CFLs last up to 10 times longer than standard bulbs, and each CFL saves about $40 in electricity during its lifetime.
Reducing Air Pollution Most electricity comes from burning coal, which creates pollution that contributes to ozone, haze, climate change and other air quality problems.
Mercury: Stress Proper Disposal CFLs contain small amounts of mercury, so recycle or dispose of properly. Using CFLs actually reduces mercury in the environment by lowering electricity use and coal consumption.
