IV Fluid Protocol • What are we doing? • Removing air from ALL fluid bags • Preventing air from getting in a patient • Why are we doing it? • To prevent air embolism • To prevent PE • To prevent stroke • How are we doing it? • Wash hands/wear gloves • Gather IV bag/IV tubing/extension tubing • Check expiration date • Assemble tubing • Spike the bag once • Remove spike and de-air bag • Spike the bag again • Flush air out of the system
