Global burden of the disease 19% of all cancer cases are attributable to the environment, including the workplace1. 1.3 million deaths annually.1 Occupational Cancer: Key facts 160* Occupational carcinogens2 (pesticides, asbestos, benzene, crystal silica, sun exposure and tobacco smoke)3. Lung cancer, mesothelioma, leukemia and bladder cancer are among the most common types of occupational cancers. One out of 10 of all lung cancer, is closely related to risks in the workplace. Pesticides An increase in cases of childhood leukemia is related to maternal exposure. Viral Infections The proportion of Hepatitis B infection due to contaminated sharps among health care workers is up to 83%. Tobacco Workers heavily exposed to second hand smoke at their workplaces have twice the risk of developing lung cancer (WHO, 2007).
