Common Core Curriculum Common Core has been implemented in NC. There are 48 other states that have adopted this curriculum. Math: the focus has shifted to using words and writing to explain the thinking processes. The thinking has also shifted towards multiple strategies to solve problems. For example: Your child should be writing to explain their thinking in solving word problems. ELA: non-fiction emphasis in literature to learn more: http://www.corestandards.org/
ELA UNITS • WE ARE IMPLEMENTING DAILY 5 (WORD WORK, WORK ON WRITING, READ TO SOMEONE, LISTEN TO READING, READ TO SELF) • CHARACTER STUDIES • NON-FICTION TEXT • NON-FICTION RESEARCH PROJECTS • HISTORICAL FICTION • FANTASY BOOKS • COMPARING MEANING OF TEXT • AUTHOR STUDY • NARRATIVE, EXPOSITORY, RESEARCH BASED WRITING • POETRY
Reading Extensions and Remediation • Common Core-Small Group • Dolphin Differentiation time: (11:35-12:05) • Groups based on student needs • Materials: Reader’s Theater, Poetry, skill based games with phonics, fluency, comprehension, and common core skills as well as Non-fiction Literature • Students will switch classes during this time based on their needs. These are flexible groups.
Math • Common Core • EnVision Math Series-school wide http://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com/ ~ students can access textbook online for additional help/assignments from class Username: LakeNorman5 Password: Splash5 ~ IXL will be used this year to provide differentiated lessons and homework
