A little about your 5th grade teacher Mrs. Moffitt: • 3rd year at Mountain Park: Grade Level Chair for 5th grade & on the leadership team • Dual Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/Special Education with an endorsement in reading • Hobbies- running, traveling, reading, Georgia Tech Football, and spend time with my family, friends and dog Molly • Meeting individual needs of students! Everyone learns differently • Make learning FUN yet challenging • Hold high expectations • Never settle for “good enough” • My goal is to prepare students for the Milestone & Promote good study habits and accountability
Daily Schedule • Students go to Specials right after announcements. On “No Specials” day, the class will have a longer homeroom period where they will participate in Genius Hour. • TAG is now a daily class. TAG students will meet with their teacher during the Enrichment block following Specials. • You can access your child’s schedule on my website- moffittk.weebly.com
Enrichment (TAG) • SEM has changed this year to PBL (Project-Based Learning) and will take place every day during the Enrichment Block. • TAG students will meet with a TAG teacher during the Enrichment block for their Science and Social Studies units, while the rest of the homeroom stays in the room.
Enrichment (TAG) cont. • The Enrichment units will rotate between Science and Social Studies approximately every 23-25 school days. I have put a copy of the rotation schedule in your Curriculum Night folder. • You will receive a unit letter from your child’s Enrichment teacher prior • to the start of a new unit that will give more detailed information.

Agendas • Your child should bring his or her agenda home every night. • It must be reviewed and signed by a parent each night. • You child should have something written in for homework each night. They will write no homework on night • we do not have homework.
5th grade homework policy • Homework is designed to provide reinforcement of subject matter and helps foster a sense of responsibility. 5th Grade Expectations • Students are expected to complete 40-60 minutes of homework Monday – Thursday, as well as a minimum of 20 minutes of reading (this may include curriculum reading). • It is the student’s responsibility to record homework assignments in their agenda and complete them when they are given.
5th grade homework policy cont. • Failure to complete homework on time could impact your child’s overall grade & could cause them not to be prepared for in class assignments. (There will be a lot of reading) • If a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to inquire about and complete missing homework assignments. • Working lunch- Students will be given a working lunch if they need extra time to catch up on an assignment.
Fifth Grade Grading Policy • Homework: Students will receive a grade of credit or no credit for homework each day. Full credit will be given for assignments that are turned in by the end of the day that they are due. If the homework assignment isn’t turned in by the end of the school day the assignment is considered late. A homework grade will be given in each subject every one-two weeks based on the number of assignments that were turned in. • Please notify the teacher on the few occasions work is not completed, but remember that our top priority is your child academic success.
Take Home Folder • This will be sent home each Thursday, and should be returned to school the next school day. • It has two pockets, a “Keep At Home” pocket and a “Return to School” pocket. • Graded papers should be reviewed with the student, if below a 70 signed by a parent, and all graded papers returned to school. These papers are filed to document your child’s progress.
Classwork • Is done in class only. Work is given to monitor a student’s understanding of the material. Work that is not finished will be marked as incomplete, but not sent home unless it is a long-term assignment. An on-task student will have ample time to complete the work in the classroom.
Late Work • Late Work: Points will not be deducted for late work. Students will work on their missing assignments during academic tutoring (AM before school) and/or working lunch until the assignment(s) have been completed. Students are graded on completeness.
Student Work • Academic Tutoring 7:15-7:40 and Working Lunch will be available to students on a daily basis. • Recovery: Students who score less than a 70% on any graded assignments will be given remediation and an opportunity to raise their grade to a 70%. • If a students receives anything higher than a 70% on a test or quiz recovery will NOT be given. • Encourage your child to study for all tests/ quizzes. I post these dates on my website along with student materials.
Fulton County Grading Scale • A=90 and above • B=80-89 • C=70-79 • F=69 and below
Grading Scale • Math: Tests-40%, Quizzes-30%, Classwork-20%, HW-10% • Reading/Language Arts: Tests/Projects-40%, Quizzes -30%, Classwork-20%, HW-10% • Social Studies/Science (Enrichment): Classwork- 90%, Homework- 10% • Enrichment grades will be give by the lead teacher, including TAG teachers
Fulton County’s policy on Make-Up work • Students have the same number of days they were absent to make-up assignments. Students should only be required to make-up assignments that are critical to understanding an objective or important for a grade. • If students are absent for a prolonged period of time, arrangements should be made through the CST. • If your child is out and homework will be picked up at the end of the day, please notify myself and the office by 8:00 am.
Reading • Independent Reading-Your child should read 20 min per day in addition to homework time. I have given each student a tracking sheet which is in their Reader’s Notebook to write down novels as they finish. • Reading Lexile levels will be monitored through the STAR testing program as well as work in class to ensure students are reading the books that are “just right” for them.
Mustang Money/Mini-Economy • Everyone will have a classroom job that rotates weekly. Students will earn $50 in salary on a regular basis. Students may also earn bonuses for doing well, receiving compliments from teachers and staff, and achieving academic goals. We will have class auctions once a semester which will have items that can be purchased with Mustang Money. • Classroom Incentives -Tickets -Bi-Weekly Raffle
Mustang Money/Mini-Economy • During our SEM unit (Mustang Market), we will create products in the classroom to sell at Market Day in May. • Since we are trying to teach about personal finances, please do not spend any of your own real money for Mustang Market items.
Housekeeping Matters • Birthdays-You may send little gifts for the class, such as pencils, stickers, erasers, etc. The 5th grade teachers request that you do not send food due to possible food allergies and dietary restrictions of the other students. • Bottled Water/Snacks
Dress Code • Dress Code-Please be aware of your child’s attire. We are reminding girls about the length of their shorts & midriff-showing shirts and boys about sagging shorts & too much skin under a jersey. Any student who doesn’t comply with the dress code will be sent to the office to call home. We go outside to recess every day, weather permitting, so keep that in mind with shoe choice.

Math 5.2 • Levels were determined for this year by all of these criteria: 1. Score on the Diagnostic Test in May (same as the former Acceleration Test) 2. CRCT score – for 4th and 5th graders 3. Math level in 2013-2014
Classwork • Schedule- -Monday: Whole group lesson followed by math stations -Tuesday & Thursday: Small Groups -Wednesday: Whole group & one on one assistance as needed during independence work time. -Friday: Questions for the week? & Friday quiz.
Classwork/homework • It is very important for students to complete their work. It is very hard to keep up in advanced math if you are not constantly practicing and enriching skills. • I give homework every night Monday-Thursday. If students have theirs on time they get a 100% completion grade for the week. Points are deducted based on incompletion. • Moby Max: I assign a skill every week. Students must complete 20 minutes on that skill by Sunday. If they complete the skill before the 20 minutes, they may continue working another skill.
