  2. WHY THE 50? WHY THE 50? E N T E T B B • Balanced – Line up and play football • Flexibility – Ability to line up in virtually any front & adjust to any scheme • Dominant Nose can control a game – increased pressure on Center • OL must face DL that will 2 gap, Shade, or Slant • Unfamiliarity with the scheme can lead to offensive confusion • Take away the edges. Great position for outside run support. • Offense has to account for 7 potential immediate rushers (5 on LOS) • Easier to blitz defensive backs - drops replaced by LB instead of DL • Easier to make coverage adjustments vs. Spread teams. • Can adjust easily to what your personnel does well.

  3. POTENTIAL ISSUES POTENTIAL ISSUES E N T E T B B • Defense revolves around the Nose. Has to control both gaps. • Hybrid DE/LB’s can create mismatches vs. the pass. • Inside LB’s must be pluggers and need to be great in pursuit. • Weakness is inside the tackles. • If personnel can’t keep with speed may have to add nickle and dime • DE’s must be able to anchor the edge and cover vs. pass

  4. PERSONNEL PERSONNEL E N T E T B B • Nose – Best overall DL. Big, strong, explosive. Control Both A Gaps • Tackles – Able to step and strike. Keep OL off the LB’s. Control C gap. • SDE – Needs to anchor the edge, control the TE. Emphasis on run/pass rush. • WDE – Quicker guy. Needs to be good in coverage and chase plays down. • MLB – Plugger. Needs to be big enough to take on OL. Aggressive downhill. • WLB – Can be smaller/quick. Needs to be able to get over the top/to edge. • FCB – Best overall corner. Needs to be a great athlete because he’s in space. • BCB – 2nd best corner. Generally has help with less space. • FS – Great athlete, smart, solid tackler. Last line of defense. • SS – DB/LB type. Often force player. Aggressive, physical, & great tackler.
