  4. What is a citation? • A citation is used to give credit to the sources you use to create an intellectual work. • A citation provides the information that is needed to find the cited source. • A citation for a journal typically contains the following elements: • Names of the author(s) of the article • Title of the article • Name of the journal • Publication date • Volume and/or issue number • Page number(s) http://www.lib.k-state.edu/help/quest/whatisacite.html

Finding Journal Articles • Use Metalib as a starting point (remember not everything is available). • Metalib will link to SFX & Databases • Is it a Journal or Database search that you need to do? • Journal Search: • Search Metalib for the Journal title by using ‘Find e-journal’ tab • SFX Window – click go if you don’t know publication data. • Journal Site (opens new window –make sure pop-ups are ok in your web browser) • You may need to search the Journal Site. • Databases Search: • Use Metalib Find Database tab (You will need Athens details). • Choose CINAHL as the database – can be changed later. • Enter OVID gateway – choose database and search topic. • SFX Window and Go to find article.

  9. Thinks to remember • Think about the information you have – do you really need to use a database to fine each journal. • Think which databases will be best to use. • Think about the Journal title (if it is known). • Remember there can be problems access full text article off campus.

Using Microsoft Word(Tips & Tricks). • Word processing for academic work: • Be organised (file documents in folders). • Save your work regularly. • Don’t leave references until the assignment is finished. • Make more than 1 copy of the document (at least 2). • Proof reading – get someone else to read it. • Spelling, Punctuation & Granma Grammar.

  14. ‘All submitted assessments should be typed/word processed wherever possible’. The work should be presented firmly stapled with the appropriate academic face sheet attached. ‘Pages should be numbered consecutively & be inclusive of appendices’. A title page should include: ID Number Module title Title of assignment & date (if appropriate) ‘The identification number number should be on every page. Use a font type & size which is easy to read Times New Roman or Arial (12) ‘Use of 1.5 or double spacing between lines enhances readability’- Not a requirement. Use of Sub Headings is a matter of personal preference but should be used judiciously. ‘Only one side of the page should be used’. Use of graphics not related should be avoided. If abbreviations are used, list them on a separate page following the title University requirementsfor assignments

  15. ‘A reference list must be included using the departments recommended referencing system. A word count not exceeding 10% Assignments should be submitted in person or by post to student Services. Not for this module, you are to submit your assignment electronically (e-mail & VLE) For other assignments: Include: A table of content page. A Reference list. A bibliography (if you wish). A word count. Don’t : Include your name. Be late submitting it. Go more that 10% over the word limit. University requirementsfor assignments
