Unit 1: Topic 2.2 Origin of the Solar System Focus on . . . • the origin of solar system as described by the Solar Nebular Hypothesis. • identifying the FOUR stages of the hypothesis.
Solar Nebula Hypothesis: Overview This idea explainedthe formation of the solar system through four stages. Astronomers believe that all parts of our solar system formedat essentially the same time andfrom the same material. Text Reference:Pages 19 – 20 and 628 – 629
Solar Nebula Hypothesis • Approximately 5 billion years ago • A huge mass of dust and gases began to contract underits own gravity • Gas cloud began to rotate faster and faster as it contracted
Solar Nebula Hypothesis • rotation caused most material to concentrate in the center • the central rotating mass of gases was packing tightlyuponitself and this caused it to heat up and burst into anewborn sun. • remaining dust and gases orbited around the central body as a flattened disk
Solar Nebula Hypothesis • temperatures within the rotating disk dropped and small particles such as iron and nickel started to form • these particles collided for millions of years and accreted to form the planets, moons, and other small bodies
Solar Nebula Hypothesis • as planets accumulated more particles, space in betweenthe planets started to clear • with time, most of the remaining debris was swept into space by solar winds
Example 1: According to the Solar Nebular Hypothesis, what is the correct sequence of events leading to the formation of our solar system?
Example 2: According to modern theory, approximately how many years ago did the solar nebula form? (A) 5 billion(B) 20 billion (C) 250 million (D) 600 million
Your Turn . . . Take the time and complete the following question . . .(Solution to follow) Questions: Explain the origin of the solar system according to the Solar Nebula hypothesis.
Solutions . . . Questions: Explain the origin of the solar system according to the Solar Nebula hypothesis. NOTE: Be sure to reference each of the FOUR stages!! A rotating cloud of dust and gases began to contract due to its own gravitationalinfluence. This material started to rotate faster and faster and flattened out into a disk. At the centre, the sun was eventually formed. Within the disk more contractions tookplace eventually forming planets. Remaining debris was swept away by solar winds.
Common Errors and Misconceptions • students would not include all stages of formation of the solar system. • students confused solar nebula with big bang.
