Think Time & Wait Time Skillfully in the Classroom By Robert J. Stahl
Brainstorm Why are some reasons wait time does not always happen in classrooms?
How long? Wait-time – periods of silence following teacher questions and complete student responses (Rowe, 1972) In her research, Rowe rarely found the wait time to exceed 1.5 seconds. When extended to 3 seconds, many benefits occurred. Think time is the preferred term as it denotes true purpose of the time.
Positive Student Outcomes Length & correctness of responses increased Larger number of students volunteered & responded correctly Scores on achievement tests increased
Positive Teacher Outcomes Questioning strategies tended to be more varied and flexible Quantity of questions decreased, but quality of questions increased Questions required more complex, higher level thinking on the part of students
Eight Categories of Periods of Silence • Each group will be assigned a category. • Be prepared to report the following to the group: • Description • Benefits (for students and/or teachers)
