How do you solve a problem like the IOTA contest? By M.Nicolaou 5B4WN/G0WWW (and D.Field G3XTT)
Contest adjudication • How does it work? • How can it become more efficient? • Does it make any difference?
Old Model • Inefficient • Time consuming and laborious • Submission to results several months • No UBN reports • Humans are NOT perfect!...occasionally errors missed…
New model • Developed over last 3years • Is 100% web-based • Uses PHP and MySQL • Designed to minimise administrator’s intervention on trivial tasks (2 people) • Provide more interactive log submission process • Improve automatic crosschecking allowing high level human interaction at all times
Does adjudication make a difference? • Significant reshuffles in the top 10 for almost every category • Examples: • MS IOTA: • Four reshuffles in top 10 [eg 7 11] • MS World • Three reshuffles in top 10 [eg 4 7]
This year’s statistics • Logs: 1524 (↑ 4%) • Cabrillo: 1410 (93%) Needed attention: 15% 72% of logs submitted with 2 weeks
Adjudication statistics • QSOs in database: • 442K (vs 483K in 2005 [▼9%]…. Poor propagation) • Adjudicated: 67% of all qsos • 12000 of those qsos were checked manually • 17000 qsos were marked as BAD and lost credit • Other stats: • 200 photos • 522 geoTags (34%)
Thanks • To all volunteers who helped with paper logs • To all who helped with debugging the robot • Translation in 9 languages • Everybody who tolerated the 2 step-process…. It meant that the results are out after 1 month from the deadline
