Key Trends Minorities face disparities in immunization rates in America By 2042, over half of Americans will be minority populations Latinos – immigrants, mixed families with strong cultural values will be 1 out of 4 Americans Our nation is undergoing a major transformation: Cultural Competence & language requirements in hospitals/clinics and for future providers in medical education and public health Health care reform expands health care coverage to Hispanics and African Americans and increases the need for education and outreach efforts Quality and value payments for care that is patient centered in medical homes Disparities in immunization rates for minority populations remain high New demand for community-based health prevention and research NHMA/NHHF seeks to cultivate public and private partnerships to make a positive impact promoting prevention awareness & good will in new and growing Latino communities and markets around the nation
Prevention Strategy 2011 Healthy and Safe Community Environments: Create, sustain, and recognize communities that promote health and wellness through prevention. Clinical and Community Preventive Services: Ensure that prevention-focused health care and community prevention efforts are available, integrated, and mutually reinforcing. Empowered People: Support people in making healthy choices. Elimination of Health Disparities: Eliminate disparities, improving the quality of life for all Americans. Immunizations – especially through States (ACA) and with Federal and State and Local public health infrastructure
National Vaccine Plan – Awareness & Programs • Health Communications for informed decision-making – patients,community, policymakers • Messages that are culturally competent, language and literacy appropriate, social media, portals, minority populations • Community– schools, parents, leaders • Educate policymakers on prevention benefits, for population based programs
National Vaccine Plan - Access Develop, implement, and evaluate population based campaign efforts through safety-net (clinics, doctors, nurs homes, caregivers, hospitals) Collaborate with health sector partners (pharmacy, insurance company, etc.) and community leaders State coalition building needed for preparedness activities in communities
NHMA/NMA/OMH Experience Advisory Committee for OMH targeted 8 cities effort Increased awareness of HHS Flu Campaign thru email blasts, list serves, mailings and CDC link to website/newsletters to networks – 15,000 + Regional Forums – Houston - Congresswoman Jackson Lee; NY; Atlanta; Kansas City – with Regional Directors, RHAs, OMH, CDC, local PH leaders & providers from hospitals, med & public health schools, clinics, practices and media and CBOs – and info sent to other 4 cities Press releases – hundreds of thousands Media interviews – TV, radio Identified physicians interested in research activities

Established in 1994 in DC, NHMA is a non-profit 501c6 association representing 45,000 Hispanic physicians in the U.S. Mission: to empower Hispanic physicians to improve the health of Hispanic populations with Hispanic medical societies, residents, students and public and private partners.
