Bitterroot Valley NATIONAL FIRE PLAN Implementation BIRT-MAC BITTER ROOT INTERAGENCY/COMMUNITY RECOVERY TEAM (BIRT) MULTI-AGENCY COORDINATING GROUP (MAC) • Formed with a grant from the Bitterroot National Forest • Acted as the coordinating group for organizing volunteer efforts to assist in after fire rehabilitation practices • Over 30 agencies and organizations guided BIRT-MAC BIRT-MAC MEETING SPRING 2001 “The BIRT-MAC organization was a huge success, especially where private landowners are concerned. When the NRCS pulled out, BIRT was there to carry on completion of the projects. Several out-of-state Forest Service BAER people told me they’ve never seen local support and interagency participation/cooperation such as the Bitterroot Fires brought forth. BIRT could probably be the model for any area that suffers natural disasters”. Neal Svendsen, NRCS Soil Scientist • Collected and assembled names, locations and needs of affected citizens • Organized and supervised the efforts of volunteers offering to provide labor and other services to affected property owners and/or residents • Coordinated erosion prevention design efforts of the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) • Spearheaded general recovery problem solving James Freeman, President Bitter Root RC&D Contact Information: Kit Sutherland, Bitter Root RC&D 1709 N First St, Hamilton, MT 59840 406-363-1444 ext. 5 bitterrootrcd@bitterrootrcd.org www.bitterrootrcd.org USFS Bitterroot National Forest – State & Private ForestryMontana Dept.
