Base your answers to questions 3 and 4on the equation below, which represents an organic compound reacting with bromine. 3. What type of organic reaction is represented by this equation? 4. What is the IUPAC name for the organic compound that reacts with Br2?
1. Esterification: is the reaction between an organic acid and an alcohol to produce an ester and water. Esters are named by using the alkyl name of the alcohol followed by the name of the acid changed to end in oate. Ex. Name the ester formed from the reaction of methanol and ethanoic acid.
2. Saponification: is the hydrolysis of a fat with a base (NaOH) . The products of saponification are glycerol and soap.
3. Fermentation: is the reaction where yeast break down sugar to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide.
4. Polymerization: polymers are long chain molecules made up of many identical smaller units called monomers. • Natural polymers include proteins (monomer: amino acids), cellulose and starch (monomer: glucose). • Synthetic polymers include the plasticpolyethylene, nylon, and polyester.
5. Combustion: when enough oxygen is present, saturated hydrocarbons will burn to produce carbon dioxide and water. C3H8(g) + 5O2(g) 3CO2(g) + 4H2O(g) *In a limited supply of oxygen, carbon monoxide or carbon (soot) is produced.
