  1. PulauUbin, the green resort Done By: Ng Jing Han Dickson Bennett Yong Liu Hsu-Wei Cheong Keng Soon Wang Qi Yu

  2. Contents • Mamam beach • Data collected • Type of engineering to be used • Green technologies • Green methods of construction

  3. Mamam Beach • Characteristics of Mamam Beach: • Direction of wind is from east to west • Destructive waves; waves have a weaker swash and a stronger backlash • Mamam Beach was chosen as the location because it: • Receives a lot of sunlight, thus it would a suitable location to amass solar energy. • Is a scenic spot. The beautiful scenery of the area would attract a lot of tourists to the place.

  6. The resort • The resort would be entirely running on solar energy, and because the area receives a lot of sunlight, there would not be a shortage of energy for the resort. Loci • It is 1800 metres away from the jetty. • The nearest hut, which is Beberek Hut, is just next to the resort. Several other huts are also very near to the hut. • Attractions, like the Balai Quarry and ChekJawa are 2000 metres away from the resort. • As it might be noisy if the campsite is too near the NPCC campsite, we have also put the resort at 400 metres away from the NPCC campsite.

  7. Waves

  8. Green technologies • Solar panels • Wind Turbines • Hydroelectric

  9. Solar Panels • The roofs of the resort would be made using solar panels. • This acts as a green source of energy, and we would never have a blackout, because PulauUbin is very sunny. • However, it comes at a rather high cost at around $50,000 for a large piece for the roof.

  10. Wind turbines • As the island is covered with sea, there would always be sea breeze. • Thus, it would be very good if we can tap into this never-ceasing source and turn it into a reliable source of green energy. • We plan to locate these turbines near the beach, where there would be minimal blockage from the trees and more wind can be converted into energy.

  11. Hydroelectric energy

  12. Hydroelectric energy • As we can see from the previous image, there is a strong stream of water. • We can build a mini-dam there to convert the rapid flow of water into hydroelectric energy. • This can also act as an attraction because dams are not common in Singapore.

  13. Type of engineering • Soft engineering • Beach Nourishment • Hard engineering • Breakwater

  14. Beach nourishment • As the waves at Mamam Beach are considered destructive, the beach area would be washed away sooner or later. • This will cause our wind turbines to collapse because there would no longer be a platform for them to stand. • Thus, we think that reclaiming the lost area with sand is a good option to solve the problem

  16. Breakwater • As we can see from the previous image, we can build a larger breakwater to protect the shore. • By building the breakwater, we are killing two birds with one stone, as the area of seawater inside the breakwater can be used for recreational activities like swimming. • We plan to locate these turbines on the breakwater, where there would be minimal blockage from the trees and more wind can be converted into energy.

  17. Transport • Solar paneled vehicles • Bicycles
