  2. What genre is “Antarctic Journal?” “Antarctic Journal” is narrative nonfiction. Journals are examples of narrative nonfiction because they tell about people’s real experiences.

  3. How are events in a journal arranged? Events in a journal are arranged in the order in which they happen. This is also known as chronological order.

  4. Why does the author need to be shown how to walk on open ground? The author needed to be shown how to step carefully to avoid damaging the environment.

  5. What is a rookery? A rookery is a nesting area for penguins.

  6. Why do you think the author gives such a detailed description of the penguins building their nests? The author describes the nest building in great detail because she wants to show how hard working the penguins are.

  7. What are krill? What eats krill, and what do krill eat? Krill are tiny shrimp-like creatures. Krill are eaten by penguins, seals, and whales. Krill eat phytoplankton, which are one celled plants that bloom in the sea.

  9. Why was the author concerned about losing the penguin egg? The penguin egg symbolized the author’s journey. She did not want to lose it because it reminded her of her Antarctic adventure.
