Thesis Statement • Women had to LITERALLY dress for success!!!
Hair Hair Coverings • The Coif was a common hair accessory that was worn by children of this time period. It was made of plain white linen and designed to keep hair in place. • The French hood was worn by women of this time. It was a crescent shaped band sloping away from the face • The Afiet was also a head covering but was in the shape of a heart. • Another head covering was a pillbox, a style of hat that often had a veil attached to the back. • Most women in this time, high and low class, wore hairnets. Upper class women wore hairnets made of gold and lower class women wore hairnets made of crepe paper . • The favorite hair colors of this time period were blonde, red and a golden color. • They wore elaborate styles to emphasize upper class dress fashions. • Frizzed and straight hair were in style.
Social Status • 1- The Nobility • 2- The Gentry • 3- The Yeomanry • 4- The Poor
Dresses • The women's clothes was to show her status in the society. • Queen Elizabeth said that rich gowns impress people. • Women wanted dresses that emphasized the shoulders and the waist so their hips looked skinny. • Ruffles were made so wide that they often caused eating difficulties for the wearer. • The amount of ruffles also showed status in the society. For example the more ruffles they had the higher their social status.
What were the materials like???? • Fabrics of clothing provided instant info about the status of the person. • Upper class= satin, silk, velvet • Lower class= wool, linen, sheepskin • The color, fabric, and material were dictated by their social studies.
