The Cell & Inheritance • How are chromosomes involved in the inheritance of alleles?
Chromosomes & Inheritance • Observations • 23 chromosomes in egg cell and 23 chromosomes in sperm cells • How many chromosomes do you think would be found in normal cells and in a zygote (fertilized egg)? Why? • 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) are found in regular cells and in zygotes (fertilized eggs) • How many chromosomes from mom? How many chromosomes from dad?
How does this relate to alleles and genes? • Alleles • Different forms of a gene. • Ex. T and t • How many different alleles or possible forms of a gene do we each have? • Genes are carried from parents to their offspring on chromosomes. • 1 chromosome from mom, 1 from dad • Each chromosome contains a different allele—or form of the gene.
Chromosome Pair Allele from Mom Allele from Dad Both alleles are different forms of the same gene. 23 Chromosome Pairs/46 Total Chromosomes in a Normal Cell 2 Copies/Alleles for Each Gene
Application • The body cells of a grasshopper that you are studying has 24 chromosomes. • How many chromosomes should you find in the grasshopper’s sex cells? • How many alleles for a gene would a grasshopper get from his mother? His father? • If the father had a genotype of Tt, what possible alleles could the offspring receive?
Review Questions • What roles do chromosomes play in inheritance? • On what structure in a cell are genes located?
