Goals & Objectives • To train and graduate at least 5 PhD’s per year equipped with One Medicine-One Health strategic approaches to advance the generation of new knowledge and apply knowledge to solve health disparity problems • To advance the vision of our President, Dr. Rochon to move TU to a Carniege Class I Research institution (produce at least 20 PhDs/ year)

IPB PhD Program • Two key areas of national and international need addressed by this program are: • recognition of the growing global challenges that emphasize the inextricable link between animal health and human health and health of the ecosystem that bounds us. • health disparity and inequity research and training with a focus upon underserved, rural communities to develop research models locally which can be replicated or translated nationally and globally.

IPB PhD programNeed & Justification • Out of the 43,000 PhD degrees awarded annually in the U.S, Only 1, 300 are awarded to African-Americans (4.6%). • In 2006, 133 African Americans were awarded a Ph.D. in the biological sciences; only 2.0% of all doctorates awarded in that discipline. • Each year the country is graduating at the best one African-American veterinarian with a PhD degree. • Among the HBCU’s, TU is currently almost at the bottom of list in conferring PhD degrees. • Extremely low numbers of minority scientists to address health disparity in the nation is a serious concern

This new faculty driven PhD program will complement the existing Integrative Biosciences (IBS) PhD program and will admit both national and international students. • PhD program is vital for a high quality research enterprise of any institution. • PhD students are the backbone for not only the bench-work in the laboratories but also for generating new ideas for research and developing grant applications. • Will allow us to accept international applicants supported by their governments or other sources • Will give additional strength to our application for reaccreditation of the school by AVMA-COE in the year 2013

Existing strengths that support the IPB PhD Program • Our location in rural, Black Belt Counties provides an important natural study area • program blends Tuskegee’s unique combination of human (School of Nursing and Allied Health) and animal health (School of Veterinary Medicine) programs, and ethical principles and approaches addressed by NCBRHC. • national and international collaborations and partnerships with universities and organizations in Asia (India), Africa, the Caribbean, South America and other potential areas of the developing world • Substantial research facilities ‑e.g., Research Core Facilities, modern equipment and information technologies for basic and applied research • Ability to consistently generate resources through grants and contracts ($10+ million/ year in external grants) • Successful Master’s degree programs already in place • An extensive variety of existing graduate level courses provide a solid platform upon which to build the PhD program

Course work & Thesis requirements For a student with B.S. degree only For a student with MS, MPH, DVM, MD etc 30 credit hours of courses 30 Credit hours of thesis • 60 credit hours of courses • 30 credit hours of thesis Three major focus areas: Infectious Diseases (Microbiology, Immunology, Parasitology, Pathology) Translational Medicine (Obesity, Cancer, Reproductive Physiology, Toxicology, Behavioral Sciences) Epidemiology & Risk Analysis Core courses for all three focus areas: Biostatistics Molecular Biology Bioethics Bioinformatics Seminar (2).
