  1. Update onSteel, Coils, Fixtures, and Prototyping J.K. Nelson 12/98 MINOS Meeting

  2. Outline • Steel Purchase and Fabrication • Steel bid package • Finalizing the machining package • Coil and Magnetics • Initial test program • First magnetics data • Fringe Fields: Data vs FEA • Fixtures • 4PP Plans J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  3. Steel Purchase • Steel Advanced Procurement Plan and Specifications • Approved by MINOS, consultants, PPD, and Procurement on 11/11/98 • Steel bid package went public 12/1 • Sent to 4 prequalified vendors • Ryerson (IL, MN) • USX (IN) • Bethlehem (IN) • Olympic (MN, IL) • Open for bid for one month • Purchase of 4 planes and options for up to 3 SM and Near • Opening of bids expected the first week of 1/99 • Selection and Best-and-Final to follow J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  4. Steel Purchase (Cont.) • Machining bid package expected to be released in a week. • Prequalified vendors • Ryerson (MN, IL) • Olympic (MN, IL) • SVF (IL) • Napco (IL) • Same steps as in the steel procurement • Final mill and fabricator will be selected based on lowest total cost (including transportation costs). J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  5. Magnetics Test Program • 150 turn coil wrapped around the 1PP and powered on 10/29 • Then • A sense coil read out by an integrator monitored the flux • Now • 4 additional mini-sense coils • Hall probe measurements of fields in air Sensor WHT BRN ORG VIO BLK # of turns 1 5 5 5 5 Area (m2) 0.0737 0.0184 0.0184 0.0046 0.0046 J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  6. (Cont.) • Near-term goals • Obtain an absolute calibration of average field in a coil. • Estimate the effective gap span in the spates • Future: Try to measure the inductance using an oscillator and mini-sense coil J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  7. First Magnetics Results J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  8. Fields in In Gaps, in Holes, and Beyond the Steel • Used Hall probe to look at fields in the largest crack (~1/8”). • The field was about 800Gauss • Used Hall probe to look at fields in a 3/8” hole drilled through both plates. • The field was about 60Gauss • Used Hall Probe to look at fringe fields. • Values ranged from J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  9. Measured Fields Some of the flux seems to be returning via the steel support beams. J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  10. Fringe Field Calculation in the Plane of the Steel J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  11. Fringe Field Calculation: Steel Layout J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  12. Fringe Field Calculation: 4cm in front of the steel plane J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  13. Thermal Data • After 60min at 100A the core temperature (without cooling) was 170C in the core of the coil • Our thermal models will be tested for accuracy in this extreme case J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98

  14. 4PPTF • Planned meeting for 1/15-16 at Fermilab • The 15th will be devoted to issues related to steel, magnetics, steel installation and handling • The 16th will be devoted to integration issues including • Mounting modules • Installation • Clear cable routing • Electronics support and locations • Readout requirements • 4PP DAQ • Planned meeting for 2/7 in LA • MINOS Steel and Coil meetings at Fermilab • (almost weekly) Thursdays at 1:30 in 11SW J. Nelson, Steel UpdateLondon MINOS Meeting 12/98
