Update on Application Prototypingusing OGC Servers Shinobu Kawahito JAXA / RESTEC WGISS-24 @Oberpfaffenhofen
Overview of the Activities • Application Prototyping in cooperation with User Agencies Prototype development in cooperation with collaborating agencies to prove the usefulness of interoperable systems to support applications. • Land Condition Information System for Disaster Mitigation • Drought Monitoring System for Agricultural Users ( Target schedule : March 2008 ) • Recent Target : How Data and Information Should Be Presented User Friendlily Seeking more sufficient way to present observation data into user friendly way rather than just showing EO images in Web Mapping.
Current Key Points on System Designing • Land Condition Information System • Earth observation images are often utilized better with comments and interpretations. • In order to allow better understanding of EO images for general users, our prototype is to do ; • Present maps and images together with descriptions (such as about data usage) • Equip write-able capability for users to input their interests and/or knowledge related to the images • Equip export capability of images, thematic maps(land vulnerability map), together with descriptions
Current Key Points on System Designing (Cont) • Drought Monitoring System • The system provides temporal vegetation change per polygon as a graph, to examine the presence of a problem (drought) • Multiple new layer types have being considered to help find anomaly • Base Data : Time series 8 days composite data (NDVI, NDII, ..) • Reference Data : - Data set of exact past drought case, etc • Tailored MMI to allow intuitive and interactive operation • Smooth interaction between Web Mapping view and graph view • Manipulate-able graph viewer to allow easy comparison of different data. • ( realized by browser-side data visualization as a graph and a data table )
In the flood case in 1986, flood region mostly corresponds to the vulnerable valley plains along rivers … Preliminary Study on Comment Recordin Land Condition Information System • GIS Features associated with Images • Geospatial features (Point,Line, Polygon) will be helpful to precisely indicate the area of interests. <Comment> • Geospatial features and comments will be more useful, if those are associated with not only lat/lon location, but also with info of which data they concern.
d b a c Preliminary Study on Comment Record (cont) • Possible Contents of Comment Record • Should have fields in a single file for : Attributions, Multiple Geospatial Data, Multiple Image URIs. < Attributions (Comments) > < Geospatial data> Title : Creator : Comments : Location : Vector data : + links EO Image1 EO Image2 Thematic Map 1 WMS WMS WMS • Which format suits to hold all of the related information ?
Preliminary Study on Comment Record (cont) • Formats to Express Geo-spatial Features • Several means exist to describe geo-spatial features together with arbitrary descriptions. • GML • GeoRSS (Simple format, Full format) : Geometry + RSS fields • KML : Geometry + Various fields (including Feature, Overlay, Style, etc) and others .. • KML is not a image data format, but describes geospatial data, image URI, bbox, time, how geospatial data should be rendered (in Google Earth), etc. It has a container field to hold multiple resources. • KML and GeoRSS is becoming popular and started being supported by some Software / Web sites.
Conclusion • Approaches to Make Prototype Systems • Stance of Web Mapping services The more Mapping tools become popular, Web Mapping type application system offered by data providers may take a role to be a starter place to find designated services (monitoring information, etc), however, users tends to want more to retrieve data resources and re-use by themselves. • Keep on close work with collaborative agencies to investigate and develop prototype system for applications while focusing on establishment of methods to translate Earth observation satellite data into information useful in agricultural services and disaster services.
