What if Comcast ruled the world? Net Neutrality and you
What is it? Net Neutrality means that essentially all traffic on the internet gets the same treatment.
What is internet traffic made of? Netflix, lots and lots of Netflix.
Why is Netflix so slow? • Until recently, Netflix’s speed index ranked Comcast one of the worst (#13) for watching Netflix. • Now, after Netflix has paid Comcast a giant sum of money, speeds have tripled. (23 Feb 2014) • Since this has happened, Verizon has come out and said that he expects Netflix to pay them for better streaming as well.
What’s so bad about that? • If Netflix is expected to make a deal with every ISP, then most likely prices will go up for us, the consumer. • No real fundamental changes had to be made to their network in order for this to happen. • What’s stopping the ISPs from say… throttling Youtube or Twitch?
ISPs can’t do this for free things… right? • They could just as easily do this
I know I’m picking on Comcast but… • They are not the only ones who love the idea of no Net Neutrality… • Verizon and ATT does too. • Verizon used the first ruling for NN to throttle things like Amazon’s AWS. • ATT has been pretty quiet, but introduced Sponsored Data
To make matters worse… • Comcast is poised to buy Time Warner Cable, creating a cable super power.
I’ll just write the FCC! • Hahahahaahahaha….HAHAHAHAHAHA • *breathes* • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Who is this? • Attwell Baker, Former FCC Commish • Former? Where is she now? • Funny you should ask, she’s at Comcast! • She also approved the NBC/Comcast deal!
What can we do about it? • Go to savetheinternet.com, sign the petition, call the FCC! • The FCC just finished turning heel on the whole Net Neutrality issue. (23 April 2014). • They will allow for Comcast and others to charge content makers for an internet “fast lane”.
“I, for one, welcome our big network overlords.” • –No one ever
