A little about yourself • Name • Title • Organization • How long have you been working with computers? • How long have you been troubleshooting computers?
What questions do I ask? • When did it work last? • What changed? • Has anything occurred in the room? • Has anything occurred in the building?
Common cabling problems • Bent cables • RJ-45 tongues breaking off • If bad kink or bend in cable, could cause problem (don’t “un-kink”) • Crossover cable thrown in the mix? • Secure cables as close to machine, floor, etc, as possible, so likelihood of cable being kicked out is not as high
Preventive Maintenance • Blow out the cases for dust. Do the same for your printers • Cheap paper has a lot of dust, which collects on the printers • Laser printers have special paper that you run through them to clean the drum
Personal backup strategies What? When? Where
What should you know about your software? • Licensing information • Available upgrades • Service Pack information • Known Bugs
Final Thoughts • After exhausting all of the potential issues that could exist, then go on to “more sophisticated” troubleshooting techniques • Don’t make it harder on yourself than necessary!
Develop Good E-mail Etiquette • Strip out addresses when forwarding. • Never open attachments from people you don’t know • Don’t be a spammer. • Never unsubscribe from a spam list.
