  1. Thomas Malthus Lanieca, Ameeta, and Jonathan

Biography • Born in 1766, in Dorking, a small town south of London. • 2nd son of 8 children. • Educated at home until admission into Jesus College, Cambridge in 1784 • Widely known for his theories concerning population. • Believed a “perfect” society could be formed. • Thomas was the first to direct attention to the danger of an overpopulation in the world.

  3. Accomplishments • Earned a Master of Arts Degree • Became a professor of history and political economy at East India Company’s College, Haileyburg, Hertfordshire • Wrote the “Essay on the Principle of Population” • Influenced Charles Darwin’s thoery of natural selection

  4. Beliefs • “Population, when unchecked, increases in a geometrical ratio. Subsistence only increases in an arithmetical ratio. A slight acquaintance with numbers will show the immensity of the first power compared to the second.” – from “An Essay on the Principle of Population” • Mathus’ theorem had three conditions: 1)      Population is limited by the amount of food produced 2)      Population increases when the amount of food available increases, unless prevented by some very powerful and obvious check 3)      These checks, are moral restraint, vice, and misery

  5. Relation to Stability • Believed a utopian could be created through the control of population. • Only through the control of population could a stable society could exist.
