Magnox Socio-economic Support Saranne Postans: Head of Communications
Who are we? • 10 Magnox sites around the country and owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) • The sites are currently managed by EnergySolutions who originally won the contract to operate the sites • The contract to operate the sites is now up for competition where companies bid to run the sites on behalf of the NDA. This is expected to be completed in 2014
Our responsibilities • Energy Act 2004 • Assistance to communities around Magnox sites following decommissioning • Manage the effects of Magnox Optimised Decommissioning Programme
What have we done? • Produced an impact assessment of the MODP • Produced a socio-economic development plan • Outlined the prioritisation of sites, based on two key elements • Relative impact of the MODP • Opportunity for alternative employment opportunity
What are we doing? • Magnox will manage a larger proportion of NDA socio-economic funding portfolio • Implement an auditable process across Magnox • Funding managed in-line with NDA criteria • One-stop shop for Socio-economic
What’s happening with the scheme? • We have combined all socio-economic and ‘spons and dons’ into one Magnox scheme which we are managing on behalf of the NDA and EnergySolutions. • The Magnox scheme is managed online via a web portal accessed through the Magnox Website. • All applications from £1 to £100,000+ must be submitted through this system which will automatically ask for varying information, depending on the level of funding requested. • Sites will no longer be the primary receiver of applications as the socio-economic team will manage them on their behalf
Who’s eligible to apply? • Community • Voluntary groups and charities • State funded play groups nurseries, schools and further education establishments • Health body • Local authority • Community or town council • Social enterprises
Who’s not eligible • Profit making organisations (excluding organisations that are looking for community start-up funding) • Individuals • Organisations applying for additional funding to support the same Magnox socio-economic scheme funded project within the same financial year • Overseas organisations • National charities • Privately funded schools, play groups and nurseries and further education establishments
About the scheme Single online application process for applications: • Up to £1,000 will proceed via the good neighbour scheme e.g. sports equipment or kit • Over £1,000 will need to meet at least one of our funding criteria and have support from other organisations • Projects between £10,000 and £100,000 will need to closely match our funding criteria, have match funding, be supported by a broad range of stakeholders and demonstrate that they mitigate the impact of decommissioning on the local community
About the scheme contd. • Applications over £100,000 are expected to be transformational and strongly mitigate the impact of decommissioning • Once submitted the applications follow a process of reviews by panels depending on the sum requested • The socio-economic funding will be distributed fairly and prioritised according to the socio-economic needs of the area • How to apply: www.magnoxsocioeconomic.com
