What is shape in garment design? • Shape is the outline or silhouette that forms when ones come together t enclose an area. • Gaments may be straight and narrow or flared and bell shaped. • Do you see the natural waistline or are there shapes that hide areas of the body?
Four basic clothing shapes: • Natural – follows the body’s outline; fit close to body; emphasize natural waistline; classic; worn easily by most average body sizes. • Tubular – Rectangular with vertical emphasis; dominant lines go up/down; adds height and thinness; Ex: T-shirt dress, straight leg pants; tailored business suit. • Bell – BOTH vertical and horizontal lines combine; cuts height; adds curves to a body; may add/subtract width; Ex: A-line skirt/dress, flared pants and jackets. • Full – More horizontal and curved lines than other shapes; make body look larger; Ex: gathered skirts/dresses; full sleeves; wide leg pants.
Portfolio Assignment • Find an example of THREE (of the 4) common shapes in garments. • Mount on black paper • Glue to Shape page • Add corresponding title (natural, tubular, bell, full) • Write a paragraph describing the EFFECTS of the garment shape on the model.
