  2. Background • Born in 1734 in a village near Lake Constance • He studied medicine in Vienna • Mesmer was married to a very wealthy lady which made it possible for him to associate with higher classes • They started to believe his beliefs

Contribution To Psychology • Developed the theory of animal magnetism • Animal magnetism: the theory says that an invisible bodily fluid reacts to magnetic fields • The fluid would cause disease when it couldn’t circulate freely • He would pass magnets over peoples bodies to promote circulation • His theory was discredited

  4. Contribution to Psychology cont. • He was one of the first people to use hypnosis • Some of his patients would fall into a trance • Hypnosis is still used today
