Positive Reductive Techniques • These are techniques that reward the nonoccurrence of misbehavior or actually interfere with misbehavior.
Helpful Techniques • Differential Attention • Behavioral Momentum • The “Sure I Will” Program • The Compliance Matrix
First Technique: Differential Attention • The technique is called differential attention because the teacher differentially (separately) pays attention to appropriate behavior and ignores inappropriate behavior.
Differential Attention Has Two Components • This method could probably work if the student is whining, complaining, clowning, etc. • “Accentuate the positive---ignore the negative” • The teacher must be creative and find the smallest behaviors to praise. • “Proximity Praise” • Ignore the student who is misbehaving and praise a student nearby. • These two components would decrease unnecessary teacher reprimands.
Second Technique: Behavioral Momentum • Behavioral momentum works by asking a student to do two or three things the teacher knows he/she wants to naturally do (making a high probability request). • Then the teacher should then follow this positive behavior flow with the desired low probability request (working on academic assignments or cleaning up his desk).
The Third Technique: The “Sure I Will” Program • The difficulty with this program is finding an appropriate replacement behavior. • The behavior must interfere with arguing, noncompliance, tantrum throwing, or aggression. • Saying the words “Sure I Will”, “OkeyDokey”, “Glad You Asked”, “Sure Any Time”, “No Problem” student is praised or rewarded increasing the positive behavior decreasing the noncopliance behavior of tough kids.
Fourth Technique: The Compliance Matrix • The Compliance Matrix is a variation of Bingo that can be used to dramatically improve classroom compliance (Jesse, 1990). • Can be used for the whole class or groups. • Can be combined with the “Sure I Will” compliance program.
