A Water Quality Comparison of Two New Hampshire Watersheds: Merrimack and Pascataqua By: KJ Baldwin Jessica Harper Jonathan Person Malarie Raynor Mentors: Jeff Schloss Elise Sullivan
Sample sites Mt. Moosilauke Salmon Falls Franklin Wastewater Treatment Plant Cocheco Concord
Introduction • Comparisons • Mt. Moosilauke (Merrimack) • Water Treatment Plant (Franklin) • NHTI (Concord) • Cocheco (Rochester) • Salmon Falls (Rochester)
Introduction • Measurements: • Bacteria • Conductivity • Oxygen • pH • Temperature • Turbidity
Hypothesis • Less bacteria/Lower pH • Mount Moosilauke • More bacteria/Higher pH • Water Treatment • Concord • Same • Salmon Falls • Cocheco
Objectives • Measure & Compare: • Bacteria colonies • Oxygen % and mg/L • pH • Conductivity • Turbidity • Determine overall water quality within the Merrimack, Cocheco and Salmon Falls rivers.
Methods • Measure the oxygen, pH and conductivity • YSI model 85 and model 6600 • Eutech Instrument (pHTestr 10) and (ECTestr 11+) • Bacteria • Plate and incubate (37°C) • Count colonies • Turbidity • Turbidimeter (LaMotte)
Summary • Bacteria count • Lowest: Mt. Moosilauke, Highest: Before WTP • Dissolved O2 and Conductivity • Lowest O2:NHTI, Highest: Rt. 16 Cocheco • Lowest Conductivity: • pH level • Lowest: Mt. Moosilauke(Top), Highest: Salmon Falls • Turbidity • Lowest: Mt. Moosilauke(Top), Highest: Rt. 16 Cocheco
