Instant speciation Allopolyploidy - Spartina In the nineteenth century Spartina alternifolia was found in Townsend harbor in southern England, it is a native of the Americas and presumably seeds were transferred in a boats bilge. There already existed a European species Spartina maritima. Early in the 20th century a sterile hybrid of these two was found and was called Spartina townsendii This went through a process of diploidization (increased ploidy) and became a new sexually reproducing species known as Spartina anglica
