“As summer approached, the war in full swing, I began to second-guess my decision to join the army. I told myself I was doing what I had to do. Not to mention I had already signed up. There was no easy way out, short of desertion. And in a time of war desertion equals jail time (14).” Ryan has signed up at the time to go into the army. He is now stuck in the army, and war has started. The only way he can get out is by leaving the army without his term ending, and he can’t do that by law. The conflict of the novel gives clues on he is worried how he is going to survive in the war.
“In New York the energy of people had a way of spreading. It was so contagious that even the panhandlers seemed glad to be panhandling (though I’m sure they weren’t). This energy seemed to animate the city air. Except in one spot the energy stood still. It was nighttime, and the only light at Ground Zero came from portable construction spotlights that sat in the enormous gray crater. The light had a soft blue quality to it, deathly. (15)” These building effect Ryan, because they are the reason the country had to go to war. The people killed in this building made Ryan want to go to war
“In Q-West there’s an army camp where B Company stays. It’s called FOB (Forward Operating Base) Endurance, and it usually takes five solid hours to get there. Five hours of bone-dry desert , no scenery whatsoever. The earth is monotonous brown. The sky is tinted tan. The buildings are few and far between, and even they are the crumbly brown of dried mud. Any plants, which are also few and far between, are the pathetic of a dead lawn after the spring thaw. (174)”
“The desert is starting to live up to its reputation. It doesn’t rain anymore. In fact, I haven’t seen a single cloud in weeks. And the temperature is climbing. It’s only February and the days are creeping up around 90.(111)” This conflict is telling us that Ryan is going to have to go through some harsh weather and that the characters in the book are all effected by the heat. And it’s only February and that is winter for us and it is cold, which shows us that in Afghanistan, it is going to get even hotter as they get closer to summer.
