RED RIBBON WEEK OCTOBER 23-31, 2010
October is Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Month “United We Stand For A Safe and Drug Free Land” Red Ribbon Week
HISTORY This October marks the 25th anniversary of Red Ribbon Week. In 1985 Federal Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique Camarena was killed by drug traffickers. In honor of his memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends, neighbors, and parents began to wear red badges of satin. Parents formed coalitions that embraced Camarena’s belief that one person can make a difference. The coalitions adopted the symbol of the red ribbon as their commitment to the creation of a drug free America. Congress officially proclaimed the first National Red Ribbon Week, October the 23rd through the 31st in 1988. The Red Ribbon has now become a symbol for the drug free movement.
